Caddell writes much of the prose in a straightforward way as if reading a historical account, allowing the consequences of the characters’ situations to sneak up on the reader. This injects a subtle horror across the stories. The presentation is simple and yet hauntingly poetic. Caddell weaves threads of family, religion, and duty through the stories, revealing slowly the deterioration brought about by complacency. Through generations of characters, Caddell creates a story that sticks, in its tragedy, its poetry, and its relevance."
